Green River Dry Flies: Big Hoppers And Stimulators In August
Posted by fliesandfinswest on Monday, February 06 @ 17:32:39 PST
There are more than one truths to any fly fishing situation. The Green River proved this point for me. I will admit that the trout on the side of the river were very hard, if not impossible to trick. Certainly, I was lured to them just like every other fly fisherman was. In order to trick those fish, I will admit that going small was the name of the game. However, it did not take me long to get frustrated with those huge trout that taunted me on the Green River banks. So, I ventured into different waters. I found the pocket water and I found the water that was all chopped up by current and I started to fly fish the Green River as I would any other river. The results were phenomenal and I was hooking some great fish on huge dry fly patterns. Big gaudy hopper and stimulator patterns were enticing the trout from their holding spots and it was sweet to watch them hammer the big dry flies with such aggresiveness. So, the lesson that I learned was this. If you find yourself at the Green River, don't be sidetracked by all those big trout that are laying there on the river banks. They are like slot machines at a casino. Of course, you will want to toss in a few quarters every now and again, but your better off playing the tables (pocket water, faster runs and more defined runs with obstructions and contour.)
