California: Lake Tahoe Fly Fishing, It's "Heavenly"
Posted by fliesandfinswest on Monday, February 06 @ 18:07:02 PST
I was kind of sick of my typical routine. Every year, it was the same. Fly into Reno, Nevada and drive to South Lake Tahoe for skiing and gambling. It was fun for a few years, don't get me wrong. But last year, it was allot more fun. I flew into San Francisco and made the drive to Lake Tahoe. Well, as I got out of the city I could not help but notice all of the rivers. So, I got to Lake Tahoe and found a fly shop. The owner told me that the fly fishing was actually very good during the winter months and that I had a few options. So, I decided to not spend the 80 bucks or whatever to ski Heavenly Mountain and instead I followed the directions and my map to the Walker River in Nevada. Don't worry, in case you don't know, Half of Lake Tahoe is in California and the other half of the Lake is in Nevada. So, to drive to Nevada is not a big deal at all. It was really sweet. As I made my way down all of the mountain passes leading to the river, the snow levels dropped accordingly. Until, I finally reached the Nevada valley and there was no snow. I found the Walker River and it was amazing. The river wound its way through fields and the snow capped sierras provided and awesome back drop. Not to mention, I was catching Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout on dry flies. So, if you have to go to San Francisco or Sacramento for business or you find yourself on vacaction in Lake Tahoe, bring a fly rod.

Walker often, mainly in winter. I saw your movie clip and it just made me smile. The walker is truly a remarkable place. I have had many frustrating and awesome days on that water. There are some big fish lurking in there and the right conditions and tactics will get them to hand. It is a river worth visiting foresure if in this area during the winter. It is just coming back from the brink of disaster. Fishing there during the dog days of summer is frowned upon, but during the winter it is hard to beat. Especially since most Ca. rivers are closed for the season. |
