Silver Salmon On The Dry: Salmon Fishing At Its Best
Posted by KodiakCommando on Tuesday, February 07 @ 19:42:06 PST
Probably my favorite way to catch Silver Salmon is on dry flies both in lakes and slow moving river pools. Use a 10 to 12 foot leader with large deer hair flies tied on bass bug hooks. Pink, white and purple and white are the best colors. Your best chance to do this is in calm low light conditions. First look for fish and then cast 6 to 10 feet in front of thefish. Make a slow strip then let it sit for 15 to 30 seconds and repeat this process. When a Coho Salmon hits, don't set the hook, let it disappear and make a slow strip until you feel resistance then set the hook. There is nothing like getting a 10 to 20 pound fish to take a dry fly!

When I was guiding up there in the late 80's we were doing this in certain places. The light conditions did not matter for us, but for some reason the river did. there was one river where this worked very well and on others that were loaded with silvers, it didn't work well at all! Go figure. |
