Tips, Ties And Tactics Golden Trout In The High Western Ponds
Posted by ChrisR on Wednesday, February 08 @ 12:29:58 PST

One of my must take trips out west is to head up to some of the high mountain ponds and satisfy my desire to get to see a Golden up close and in person. I've seen quite a few pics of this beautiful little trout but rarely hear of many who have ever had the experience of catching one. Has anyone experienced catching one of these beauties that could share the experience and tactics required to trick one into taking your fly. From the little I have found they are tough to catch even on the finest tippets and smallest of flies.

I'm from Montana and here the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks link to Golden Trout.
If interested I have an excel sheet with all the lakes in the Beartooths that have Goldens in them. Just send me a PM and I will try to attach it to my reply.

I don't have much experience with Golden Trout. I am sure there are some people here who can respond to this.

Hey ChrisR-I did a little homework and found out some interesting things about Golden Trout. Some I knew and some I did not. First off they are gorgeous-I knew that! I have caught Rainbow trout that were pushing the colorations of Goldens. They are cousins of the Rainbow Trout. Inbred cousin to be exact. I was alway told that they were the decendants of isolated populations of Rainbows. I have fished for them. Believe it or not, I used to fish a little spring fed lake in NY that was stocked with Goldens. I Never caught one. There are some opportunities to catch Goldens in California-their native terrain. High mountain lakes in the Sierra range are your best bet. With some limited opportunities in Wyoming and Montana. The Delorme map lists them in several bodies of water in those states.

We have some goldens here in Alberta. A few high altiude lakes were stocked with them back in the thirties, I believe.

An outfitter here does heli trips into a couple of the lakes. www.goldentroutsafari.com
