Western Tailwaters: Light Tippet-How Not To Break Off
Posted by joey on Tuesday, February 14 @ 16:02:48 PST
I have fished some western tail waters that hold absolute monster rainbow and brown trout. The problem is that they get fished so hard they are often very selective and shy. I would use an 11 foot 6x fluro leader when nymphing and often run 7x fluro off the bend of my lead nymph to my trailing nymph. I hooked a large rainbow and battled it for a few minutes when the 7x snapped. Are here any particular methods anyone would suggest when fishing with light tippets?

First I would say re-tie often. Not just after catching fish. My second suggestion would be, don't pinch weight on the line. That weakens it way too much. Use the method I describe in my nymphing video. Third a good disk drag is always helpful. Anyone have additional suggestions? |

IF it's at all possible try to walk as fast as you can safely while a big fish is taking line or pulling. This seems to really help. I also would set my drag much looser than normal especially for the initial run. |
