Skagit, Skykomish And The Stillaguamish: April Steelhead On The Spey
Posted by greg on Wednesday, February 22 @ 07:25:35 PST
A friend and I are going to Washington the 1st of April for Steelhead. We are going to fish 3 rivers that form a loop starting about Arlington, to include, Skagit, Skykomish and the Stillaguamish. We plan on using spey rods and regular rods. I am looking for some advice on types of flies,i.e. wet, nymphs etc., leader and towns where we could stay?

Flies are easy. I would have plenty of streamers tied with bunny strips and palmered marabou. I would also consider going to the tube fly. Tie some in bright colors and some in dark. Fish bright on bright days and dark on dark days. Generally, remember there are know rules with steelhead only generalizations. Don't forget the egg patterns. They are deadly effective on the swing. Leaders with the spey was the hardest for me to get used to. When you are fishing sink tips you only need a small leader. Less than 24 inches of 15 pound fluoro will work. At times I have fished less than 8 inches and still caught fish. There are a couple hotels in Skykomish including river front. Call ahead for availability. |
