Box Canyon Rainbow Trout: Henry's Fork Nymphing Nirvana
Posted by jason-c on Thursday, March 09 @ 10:51:36 PST
When people think of the Henry's Fork in Idaho the typically picture long flat runs dimpled with rising trout. Much of it is just that. However, the Henry's Fork River in Box Canyon is not. Box Canyon is the tail waters below Island Park Reservoir. It is not typically Henry's Fork fly fishing. Riffled white water, massive current seems and treacherous water makes up the upper few miles. It was late summer the first time I fished it. I decided to avoid the crowds and small dries on the lower flat water sections to do a little fast water nymphing. After wrestling unsuccessfully with tiny nymphs I decided to throw something big at them. I tied on a size 12 rubber legs Copper John on 3x tippet. The ridiculous looking one tied with oversized white rubber legs. It was more out of frustration and spite than any deep knowledge of the river. Two casts later I was tied into the biggest Rainbow Trout I have ever hooked, outside of steelhead of course. I got a great look at the fish, and once he saw me it was all over. With one blistering run the fish screamed across the river, through the white water, took me into my backing and broke me off. The point is that sometimes it is good to fish "outside the box", sorry for the pun. Nevertheless, sometimes a ridiculous looking fly is just different enough to spark the curiosity of the biggest fish.

I also want to say that parts of it were wadeable. Does anyone know if that part of the river is wadeable depending on your wading skill? |
