Alaska Salmon: Call Them Pinks, Call Them Humpies, Some Just Call Them Fun!
Posted by KodiakCommando on Saturday, March 18 @ 08:48:11 PST
Mentioning Pink Salmon aka Humpies or Humpback Salmon to some Alaskan fisherman brings out
frowns and curse words. Humpies get a bad rap from many Alaskans. In
my opinion they are a great game fish, if you target them at the right
time. Most people encounter pinks while fishing for silvers with 8 weight rods. By that time they are in the river and near the end of their lives. Obviously those tired pinks that can’t compete with such a heavy outfit. Match the right outfit to pinks
when they are fresh and it is a different story. Pinks turn as soon as they enter fresh water so the ocean is the best place to catch them fresh and hot, the earlier in the run the better. I use a 5 weight with 6 to 8 pound test. Every time I hook a dime bright humpy I see backing, some times as much as 50 yards worth of it. Incoming tide is the best. Clousers and shrimp patterns are usually the hot flies. Generally the shrimp patterns work the best when the pinks are packed together
in shallow water. Whatever the fly, pinks like a slow retrieve. Do all
these things and you will find that pinks are a great game fish, not a
nuisance!
