Steelhead In The Pacific Northwest Hi Speed Only

The Sauk and Skagit Rivers in Washington State are the native home of wild steelhead. The fish are fresh from the ocean and pull hard. Barbless single hook regulations make it difficult to close the deal. The best advice I can give is to keep your fly in the water as long as you can. The more time you put in and the more river you cover the better chance you have of tying into one of these chrome bright beauties. Landing these fish is another issue. Tube flies and a down and across hook set help deal with the barbless regulations. Side pressure with the rod parallel to the water helps keep the hook set in the corner of the steelhead's mouth. However there are no guarantees when fishing for Pacific Northwest Steelhead.

Killer scenery man. Thats the type of place that makes you feel really small. Looks like pretty undefined water. Did someone point you in the right direction or did you just poke around untill you hit steel?

We poke around a ton. Basically we were looking for the traditional features-waist deep walking speed water with some pinches and boulder. We had to watch out for sandy bottoms too. It seems that up there steelhead will not hold over sandy bottoms. Logging has created a little bit of a problem with sand being flushed into the river. But good water was not too hard to find.
