Tube Flies And Spey Rods: Steelhead Teasers
Posted by dscott on Thursday, April 06 @ 20:42:24 PDT
I have found myself thinking a lot about spey rodding for steelhead in British Columbia and the Olympic Peninsula lately. I have even been at the bench tying some of the more memorable flies that worked for me, mostly tube marabou patterns. I also remember some success in British Columbia using rabbit strip leech patterns. These patterns have excellent motion in the water when fished on the swing. The blue and black rabbit strip tube flies sticks in my head. I found that a tube fly tied on aluminum tubes helps get the fly down fast and prevents breakage. Nothing is more frustrating that busting a newly tied fly after only a few casts. After tying in a rabbit strip tail about 2 to 4 inches long I like to palmer marabou and then bugger hackles from back to front. For bright days I prefer orange or red rabbit strips with hot pink marabou finished with a few turns of back bugger hackle. For overcast days I like the black rabbit strip, crystal flash with blue marabou and black bugger hackle. I am always interested in new color combinations if anyone has any hot combos.

Re: Tube Flies For The Spey Rodder: Steelhead Teasers by jeremy on Friday, April 07 @ 05:03:44 PDT http://www.ineedasimplesolution.com | hey dscott,
you should check out the pattern i have been working with -- the "Simplefly System" -- seriously - i read your comment about weight, bunny fur, leach patterns and color combinations --- you might find this to be an effective and new alternative to tube flies... especially when you see the articulation that is achieved...the ease of switching and combining and the fact that bead chain size and length can be used to provide various weights ... i am curious to see what you think. Here are a couple resources for ya.. to better explain the concept... let me know your thoughts... i used it on the great lakes last week for steelhead and they ate up the simplefly like candy...
