Tips, Ties And Tactics Mexico Rooster Fish: Turning Of The Tides

Mexico Roosters 2005 Hi Speed Only

Mexico Roosters 2006 Hi Speed Only

2006 marked my second try at Roosters in Mexico. This is extremely difficult fly fishing to say the least. Roosters are extremely particular when it comes to flies and getting them to come close enough to shore requires a very specific set of circumstances. Bait, tides, temperature, water turbidity, wind, and many other factors can for or against an angler. This year it was quite clear that full moons and mid-day low tides are not ideal. It is funny how every species of salt water fish is affected differently by the moon and the tides. Some species make themselves available during high tides and feed during full moon cycles. Others like the Rooster are more easily caught from shore when rising tides push bait balls in to the beach and beat them up in the process. If you plan on going to Mexico to chase these spectacular fish, be very aware of how celestial bodies can make or break your trip. I would also suggest getting a guide. I know of a few expert guides that can almost always put people on fish.

jas ---- yup like a great fish -- they drive ya nuts ... probably the very thing that makes them "great fish" ---- nice work .. your gonna love albie fly fishing on marthas vineyard this fall --- make sure you bring plenty of backing and stock up on your ego too ... cuz, like the roosters, the albies (from shore) have a way of really driving you nuts to the point of painful humility:) .... finding them, tricking them and then landing them can sometimes be enough to bring a fly fisher to their knees.... and just when you think they got ya beat .. and you've convinced yourself that you are the worst fly fisherman on earth ....ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!! - can't wait! tell kory or dusty that they should make the trip too... they would love it.

That is the second time I have seen a mini van stuck this summer. Looks like you had a bast I guess it is tough not oo when you are in such a nice spot. What was that fish you were holding up? it looked like a needle fish in steroids. ------

Keep us posted with the fishing out west. I will be in CO in August maybe we can meet and harrass some trout:)
