Tips, Ties And Tactics Spring Fishing In Colorado, Wyoming And Montana: Where Is The Good Fishing?
Posted by fly_phishr on Monday, July 24 @ 20:09:39 PDT

I am planning a 5 day trip for the spring and I am hoping to come out west. I have never been out there so I am trying to get some info like-where I should go for some nice sized trout. I am looking into trout fishing in Colorado, Montana and Wyoming. I'm looking for public land. Is there plenty of public access in those states? Which rivers are good ones during the spring? Any other suggestions??? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
fly_phishr

Have fun there is plenty of water out there to fish I have never been to MT or WY but if its as good as it is in CO you are in for a great trip. I just got back from CO and have fly fished out there numerous times. I will send you a PM with some spots that I have had good luck at.

I live in Helena, Montana and every year around the end of april or the beginning to middle of may you can fish the trout spawn on lakes like 15 minutes from town and you can catch rainbows into 5-7 lb. class. And the occasional brown. Also if you come closer to june you can catch ALOT of Carp.

Late June early July can be awesome all over the west. Run-off can be an issue during that time of the year. It depends on snowfall and weather. I would pick an area that has a tailwater option near by. That control will help minimize the run-off problems freestone rivers may have. Also watch out for closures. There are a few rivers that close during the Cutthroat spawn. Utah, Idaho and Wyoming are great options. The Provo and the Green offer excellent fishing at that time. Colorado also offers great options, however runoff goes a little longer there because of the altitude. In Utah and Wyoming this year he first week of July was unreal. Green Drakes started popping around the 4th. The Henry's Fork in Idaho, near Island Park, was on fire. Flexibility may be the key. Do little research on which rivers are high and which are not a few weeks before your trip.
