Tips, Ties And Tactics Green Drakes, PMD's, Caddis: Western Dry Fly Action At Its Finest

Western Trout Fishing Hi Speed Only

Uncle Dan and I did a bunch of fishing all through Wyoming and Utah last week. It does not get any better than the conditions we had. Several species of stone flies, Pale Morning Duns, Green Drakes, and many different evening caddis heated up the dry fly action. Notably on one river in Wyoming the PMD hatch was so thick that it was almost impossible to get an eat on a PMD dry. We tried multiple patterns but during the heart of the hatch there were just too many naturals to compete with. So we “un-matched the hatch” with caddis dries and emergers. Fish ate them on almost every cast. We also had excellent action with generic attractors and big terrestrials. Un-matching the hatch is no secret but it is difficult to commit to it when you are in the thick of a hatch. After this trip I am a firm believer and would highly recommend it.
