Steamboat Springs, Colorado-Yampa River: Stagecoach Resevoir
Posted by joey on Monday, August 28 @ 08:54:14 PDT
I am heading to CO towards the end of Sept. and was going to head to Steamboat Springs for a couple days. I have heard that the tail waters below Stagecoach Res. on the Yampa produce large Rainbows and Browns. I also understand that this part of the river gets fished heavily and that the fish are very educated. Does anyone have any suggestions for this part of the River? Also any info on the rest of the yampa would be great (areas to go,not to go, flies etc..). Thanks in advance.

Re: Steamboat Springs, Colorado-Yampa River: Stagecoach Resevoir by cutthroatCO on Tuesday, August 29 @ 14:46:41 PDT | Joey--
I was just in Steamboat last week, and fished the tailwaters on the Yampa and had some epic fishing--I caught 5 fish over 20". This was in the tailwaters of the Catamount reservoir (the one below Stagecoach.) In terms of fishing the area right by the Stagecoach res. you need to go with tiny stuff *(typical tailwater flies): size #22-24 stuff, especially stuff with red on it. You should also use Fluorocarbon almost exclusively, because, as you said, these fish get fished a lot. In addition, try not to use any strike indicators if you can, which should be possible, because a lot of it is site fishing. The best thing to do before you go is to go into Steamboat downtown and go to The Bucking Rainbow flyshop (730 lincoln) and ask them where to go/what to use.
Hope this helps.
