Tips, Ties And Tactics Yampa River Rainbows: Huge Fish On Small Flies-Tips For Landing The Big Ones
Posted by fliesandfinswest on Wednesday, October 18 @ 09:27:31 PDT

I have just returned from The Yampa River near Steamboat Spring, Colorado. This is a fishery full of giant rainbows that mainly key in on small insects. These fish are so big that keeping these behemoths from bending the hooks out becomes a problem. They are not real line shy so 4X and 5X tippet works fine, but they pull so hard most hooks cannot take it. Landing these huge rainbows requires a heavy hook. My buddy Walter turned me on to small hooks made by Diaiichi. The Diaiichi 1270 Multi Use Curved Hook is a bit

heavier than most and works great for midges and the Diaiichi 1270 is an excellent micro may fly hook. If you need to go super small Tiemco makes hooks down to #32 (good luck tying with those). They make great flies but have a tendency to be a little light for the big guys. Let me know what you think of these tips or if you have any additional information you would like to add.

I have found that keeping your drag loose helps when fishting those bigger fish. The spots I fished required light tippett (6-7x) so when the fish ran I just let the drag do the work and applied little pressure. Basically i would try to let the fish wear itself out and then work it to the net.

I have a naive question. I think that I have seen some salmon flies tied such that the fly is small but tied on a larger hook. Is it possible to get the fish to take small flies on larger hooks in order to "have your cake and eat it too" (hook the fish and land it)?

If the timing is right, sure. I caught some on pretty big lead flies. When the Baetis and mohogany duns were about we did well on #18 and #20. When is was cloudy the streamer fishing really picked up. It also depends on where you fish. More pressure=smaller flies.

wow --- that is crazy .. seriously size #32 ...i saw the fly in the trout's mouth in the video and that was just unbelievably small .. i got a question .. will these fish also take streamers and such and regular nymphs? they must? or is the only game in town size #32 ... just curious, if i ever found myself on the yampa .. if some of my go to patterns that worked fine in wyoming, utah, california, alaska etc.. would work on the yampa too? ok thanks.
