Salmon River, Idaho Steelhead: It Is Not All About The Great Lakes
Posted by skitch976 on Tuesday, November 07 @ 15:50:41 PST
This web sight is a staple in my daily routine. Each day I log on to see the newest success stories, tips, and tactics as well as new comments on topics past. During spring and fall, day after day I read reports on Flies and Fins and Flies and Fins East about the wondrous Great Lakes steelheading. Never do I hear reports and/or tactics from the other Salmon River... in Idaho. I am just getting into Steel Heading and am enthralled with the monsters, but the closest location for it to me is 6 hours away in Salmon, Idaho. Does anyone out there have anything to say about this wonderful Steelheading river? Success? Tactics? Anything would be nice. As always, Thanks.
Jim

Great point. Idaho offers excellent steelhead fishing. I make several trips per year. Check out the video section for some great stuff. You can also use the search bar for several Idaho steelhead posts. I would recommend following the idaho Fish and Game's creel survey reports. They offer up to date information on catch rates. I like to see them at 1 caught per 12 hours fished or better. I would also suggest a spey rod. There are plenty of fish but there is plenty of water too. I usually swing tube flies. FYI-I believe it is all barbless up there. There is a ton of access too. I can't wait to hear what others have to say.-Jason |

Re: Salmon River, Idaho Steelhead: It Is Not All About The Great Lakes by joey on Tuesday, November 07 @ 19:28:44 PST http://www.fliesandfinseast.com | Jim- I have also been doing some research on the steelhead fishing in Idaho.. I have seen picture of some of the fish caught out there and I need one!!! I am from the east coast and am also 6+ hours away from the salmon river (NY) the steelhead fishing is grreat but I would love to try some new water. Clear water was the river I was researching, they have a run of steelhead called the "B" run, which I believe are fish that stay in the ocean longer than others making them HUGE. I don't know the tactics for fishing the bigger water but from what I have read it seams it is mostly spey and or floating. I hope you find them this season and give us all a tip. good luck

The Salmon fishes well until dead water freezes where the river enter the Lost River National Forest. Eggs and tube flies all the way! |

Re: Salmon River, Idaho Steelhead: It Is Not All About The Great Lakes by wesfishes on Saturday, November 25 @ 07:08:31 PST | | Jim, I am a newbie to the steelheading too and am very interested in making a trip very soon to Salmon in ID. I have researched online and fly shops for the last few weeks and what I have found is that the Salmon has a big following in SLC. Spey rods are pushed, but I think due to the $. Dont get me wrong, the 12-14' rods are very nice for stack mending and shooting 70' of line very quickly but I plan on attacking with a 9ft 7wt to start. Egg patterns in blue are a safe bet and any other color as well. High sticking does work if you get enough weight on your flies-just drift it right in front of their face.-Shoot me a line and maybe we can hook up there soon before the thing freezes over. |
