Pacific Northwest Steelhead And Salmon: Gear Tips
Posted by combatfisherman on Friday, November 10 @ 11:20:46 PST
I'm moving to Washington State in a couple of months. I would like some advice on the best rod lengths and weights for steelheading. I'm a Sage fan, but I'm open to buying rods of the same caliber. I'm a newbie when it comes to salmon and steelhead. I can't wait to start this journey. Your help will be much appreciated!

Re: Pacific Northwest Steelhead And Salmon: Gear Tips by jason-c on Monday, November 13 @ 07:31:05 PST http://www.fliesandfinswest.com | | I would go with a 12-15 foot 8 or 9 weight spey rod for steelhead. Salmon are a whole different ball game and you may consider a 12 wt. The brand is really a matter of personal preference. However, be sure it has a lifetime warrenty. Be sure to get a reel that balances well and has a good drag system too. My spey reel doubles as my salt water 10 wt reel. That works well. I also prefer tube flies. I believe they hold fish on barbless hooks better. |

Re: Pacific Northwest Steelhead And Salmon: Gear Tips by jason-c on Wednesday, November 15 @ 18:14:40 PST http://www.fliesandfinswest.com | | I have only fished the big rivers up there. But, I am know there are smaller rivers with steelhead that a single handed rod would be fine on. I like a 9 foot 8 wt or 9wt for the smaller rivers I fish back East. |
