Silver Creek, Idaho: Maddening Fun
Posted by waterwhippa on Wednesday, December 06 @ 14:41:56 PST
I am curious to hear some experiances about Silver Creek, Idaho. A friend and I fished there a few years ago and I replay those memories often. It was early July and the tricos hung over the water like storm clouds. It was truly unbelievable. Between the 7x, float tube, size 24 flies, grassy bottom, crazy up-welling currents and super educated trout it was one of, if not the most challenging fly fishing I have ever taken part in. Any Silver Creek tips or experiences you all would like to share?

Extremely technical fishing at times. Often one is not even able to put a false cast in the direction of a rising fish because the line spray will put them down. Most of the year tiny flies are called for. There is, however, an awesome brown drake hatch. People fish them clear through the night it seems. Gotta love the spring creeks. |

I've been to Silver Creek three years in a row back in the late 90's. First time, I took the dirt road accross the mountains from Mackay 30 miles towing a camper...whew. Stayed at Hayspur for 2 weeks on second and third trip. Went in late August -early Sept for Trico hatch. To say that it was graduate school and an awesome experience is to understate. I was alone for days and days, tying each morning the female trico spinners with one wing cocked up slightly so I could see MY fly among the thousands who would descend promptly at 9 AM in clouds like miniature helicopters...I used to hum the "Ride of Valkeries" when they came ....you know, what Robert Duval played on the Hueys in the movie Apcolypse Now. Unbelievable numbers of bugs.
The second fall, I camped with Suart Evett, the legendary inventor of the "Evett Trico" and Rubber-Up and prof of Shakespeare at Boise St. College. we drank a lot of wine, tied flies ea. morning, and fished several days together. I can truly say that my time there fishing both Silver and Big Wood was perhaps the finest time in my angling life.
Tough, educated Trout of super strength, tiny flies and satisfying nights bar-bQ steaks, sipping V.O.
Tubed the Ranch 2wice, fished it stem to stern and have always wanted to go back. Truly the most exciting toughest dry fly Trout fishery I have ever experienced. It prepared me for guiding Maine's Kennebec and taught me so much.
To camp at Silver with my finest angling friends for a week would be heaven on earth. |
