The Hellgrammites or Dobsonfly: Slump Buster Patterns
Posted by fliesandfinswest on Thursday, December 28 @ 17:12:39 PST
Hellgrammites or Dobson fly larva are a widely distributed food source for trout and steelhead. They make a sizable meal and once dislodged from their rocky hiding places they drift helplessly at the whim of a river’s currents. Some of these insects grow to over 2 inches long. However, many fly fishers overlook these patterns. Sure they are time consuming to tie (something I have never been a big fan of) and many fish will take woolly buggers, large stone flies and even caddis patterns for
Hellgrammites, if they are on the feed. But with that said it is always worth while to have a couple Hellgrammite specific patterns in your box, for those times when the fishing is particularly slow or when no hatch is apparent. Often big fish will move on these big patterns and take the opportunity to eat something they recognize as a “good meal”. This year I found these critter specific patterns to be excellent "slump busters".
