Tips, Ties And Tactics High Country Fly Fishing: Light Weight Setup
Posted by skitch976 on Friday, February 09 @ 14:34:07 PST

I am getting a tax RETURN this year and am therefore purchasing a new rod and reel. I have been doing a lot of high country, smaller size fly fishing and have firmly decided on a TFO 3 weight rod. I am not sure what reel and line I should go with though. This may be a naive question, but do reels make a difference in the loopiness of the line? What I mean is when dry fly fishing I cast, and too often the line will coil. I am pretty sure my cast is good. So id this a problem with the reel, fly line, leader, tippet, or what? I just don't know. Thanks for you help on my many inquiries.

What do you mean by "loopiness"?

If by "loopiness" you mean line memory, then yes ther are some answers. Line memory can occur from tightly reeling your line up after use, especially after prolonged non use like during winter months. Try loosely reeling in line between useage, you can stretch your line a bit like you would do to straighten leaders or possibly look into a mid or large arbor reel. Hope that helps!

I think dee knows waht i am speaking of. But he mentioned stretching ot leader. I have never done that and don't know if there is a particular way to do so. Any tips?

Also any tips on the reel? It needs to be probably $60 or less.

finding a large arbor reel for under sixty dollars will be next to imposible. I have a Ross Flywater for a 2wt. it's a decent reel and serves the purpose. The Fly Start is a little cheaper, but i didnt like the drag but you will probally be fine with it on a 3wt because you probally wont need the drag much. If youre having a problem with line memory you might want to try a dry fly specific line. They are a little softer and dont seem to have much memory. I like the RIO Grand
