Salmon River, Idaho: Spring Steelhead Patterns
Posted by skitch976 on Wednesday, February 28 @ 15:31:21 PST
In about a month I will be Making a trip to the Salmon River in Idaho for the spring Steelhead run. I have read alot of theories on what types of flies to use for steelhead and in what conditions, but can never keep them straight. Are there any rules of thumb concerning what patterns (size, color, material) to use in cold/warm, clear/not clear, overcast/not cloudy conditions? I am open to anything.
Thanks

Also the brighter the conditions the smaller the fly in my experience. |

For fishing streamers on the swing I like smaller flies for clearer water and a slower presentation for colder water. As far as color goes, I like to hold my flies up to the sky since that is the background the fish will see them against. The ones that "blend in" the least are the ones I go for. Usually black and blue on cloudy days and pinks and reds on clear days. Water color plays into that a bit but not much. |

Well I guess the bigger more threating looking flies would work, Steelhead protect their reds and that's about what they'll be doing then is makeing Reds. Why the Idaho Fish& Game doesn't have the forsight to close fishing for steelhead during the spawning cycle is beyond anything I can think of, but I guess the $ makes more sence that regaining back natural spawning of a threated specises. Sorry I can't spell worth a damn. But I do know the fish. I'm not getting on you skitch, your doing everything the law says you can. |
