The Sandy, Clackamas, Deschutes, And Willamette: Why Does Purple Work So Well?
Posted by Deschutesboy on Sunday, April 01 @ 08:50:17 PDT
There I times in late spring and into the summer when I will try countless flies to match the hatch and nothing will work. So I started tying a few purple patterns like-a purple angel, street walker and a purple flash-a-bugger. I fish them with a four foot leader, five feet of 7x tippet and two to three split shot, depending on water depth/speed. Usually, that set up works well for picky fish. Does anyone else find that purple can get trout moving? We all know steelhead love purple, but trout do to. Oregon rivers like the Sandy, Clackamas, Deschutes, and Willamette hold fish that love the purple fly. I am sure it goes way beyond even them. Why does the purple fly work? Any thoughts?

Purple can be a great color. Here on the north platte on an overcast spring day a purple scud kills. My boss at the platte river fly shop invented this one www.wyomingflyfishing.com/originalflies.aspx Its called a purple back scud and is a sweet bug on the tailwaters.
