 Anchorage, Alaska: What Is Good And What Will I Need?

I'm going to Anchorage, Alaska in June to visit my daughter and family. My son in-law is a spin fisherman and is going to be taking me fishing so that’s what I will do. Just the same I'd really like to do some fly fishing if the opportunity comes up. I'm going to take two fly rods with me, both are 9' 4pc. rods, one is a 5wt. and the other is an 8wt. I don't have an extra spool or sinking line for the 8wt, will I need to get one? Any information or advise would be appreciated.

That would help me awnser your question as there is a lot of options around anchorage, fish the big Kenai 3 hours south, fish the matsu rivers or lakes or even head up to fairbanks. Ask your family what waters you'll be fishing and let me know because that will dictate rods, lines, flies,types of fish and such. |

That Is the middle of the king run. it usually ends in early July, Except on the keni River. The keni kind of has it's own set of regulations. I think you can get away with fishing for kings on your 8wt. I fished a 9wt a 10 wt would be better but I have also landed a handfull of 20-30 pound kings on my 6wt. BUT YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFULL! A sinking line or sink tip line would be nice. if you dont have one you can just use big split shot but you will have a hard time casting them, it will be the duck and chuck method. The only fly you realy need is a purple egg sucking leech. i use a size 0/2 for kings and a 4, or 6 for trout. Reds will also be running around then. The russian river has special regulations on how big the gap of the hook can be so your best bet is to buy thoes flies there. there cheap 2 for a dollar at the grocery store. good luck. |
