Western Hatches and Water Conditions: Change Your Timing
Posted by fliesandfinswest on Tuesday, May 29 @ 11:04:08 PDT
The west has experienced a low snow pack year and it is important to adjust your schedules accordingly. Last year the mountains of Utah, Idaho and Wyoming had a banner snow year and snow packs were much above average. This year is a very different one. Keep in mind that hatches will occur sooner and many will experience a shorter duration. Plan your trips accordingly. Late summer will prove difficult with warm low water conditions prevailing. Will the fishing be poor?-of course not. However, simple changes in
timing and tactics will greatly improve your angling experience. Last year June and early July were tough with high water conditions prevailing this year that will not be an issue in most places. Later in the season, late July and August, try to fish early in the morning. When the water is cool.

It seems that at least here in Utah everything is 2 - 3 weeks earlier than last year. Most stillwaters have come and gone for there spring prime and upper elevation waters are now accessable and fishing well with little crowds. With the minimal high water releases Drakes, Salles and PMD's are right around the corner. |
