Flies And Fins West
Use fliesandfinswest.com to post any fly fishing tips or tricks that you have learned while fly fishing the West. If you have a question, ask it. A question answered and archived will serve as a tip for someone else down the road. We understand that fly fishing is an ever learnng sport so if you have a tip pass it along to another fly fisherman. We believe that everybody is constantly learning, and it is not possible to "know it all". Enjoy.

Dano's Lake Erie Tributary Video
Hi Speed Only
We all know the west is the place for steel, but the Great Lakes are pretty fun too! Call them what you want...lake run bows, domestics or steelhead, I call them fun to catch. I was able to get out and do some Great Lakes tributary fishing recently. This fat girl came on a pink flesh pattern. The Salmon River in New York is one of the best GL tributaries, with plenty of room to roam and the fish come a little easier there than they do on the west coast! BTW-I am not distorting this fish. I think it had an eating disorder. Dano had some nice fish as well in this Lake Erie video he sent us. Who says the lake Erie fish are all small? |

Summit County Colorado Tips: Blue River, Snake River?
Posted by DavidJinPa on Wednesday, August 27 @ 14:12:21 PDT
I'm a slightly above amature Pennsylvania fly fisherman, that will be visiting family in Dillon, Colorado in a few weeks. I plan on trying my luck on the Blue below Silverthorne, and the Snake above Dillon Reservoir. Can anyone give me some tips on where I should concentrate my efforts? I'd like too stay semi close too Dillon due to limited vehicle usage, but from what I've seen on maps, it looks beautiful a few miles below Silverthorne. Will be practicing all catch, and release only also of course. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Utah Stream Access: Rule Change
Posted by fliesandfinswest on Monday, July 21 @ 12:06:04 PDT
The Utah Supreme Court has stepped up in favor of angler access rights (http://www.sltrib.com/news/ci_9931514). There is so much water in Utah that has been locked down by private landowners. Not any more. The ruling came last week deeming that the public has the right to access private water through public lands. (read it for yourself http://www.utcourts.gov/opinions/sup...tser071808.pdf). As most people know fly fishing has become very popular and Utah is no exception. This will help spread that pressure out. Anglers will still have to work for the "good stuff" as access points are limited and, in many cases, long walks will be required. I would advise a few words of caution. Make sure you are using public access point, Pick up you trash and do not abuse this privilege. It is a privilege! Respect the landowners. They are not going to be happy. You may consider a bullet proof vest until they settle into the idea.

Utah Spring Runoff: Solutions?
Posted by dee on Thursday, April 10 @ 13:51:50 PDT
We've had quite a winter here in Utah as well as most of the West. With the snowpack being much deeper than the last few years we're in for quite an intense spring runoff. Although it will be greatly rejuvinate the fish and river bottoms, rivers will be basically unfishable for an extended period. My question is what will you fish for during that time? Head to the salt? Exotic locales? Lakes and reservoirs?

Utah Midge Fishing: Heating Up!
Posted by fliesandfinswest on Wednesday, February 20 @ 16:38:07 PST
Utah midge fishing is heating up. Many Utah rivers are exploding with activity. Sunny warmer (relatively speaking) afternoons have sparked huge afternoon midge hatches and the fish are on them. The key is to watch the takes. If you see a porposing type rise then fish are most likely taking the pupa while they are making their way to the surface, taking advantage of their vulnerability just before or just as they emerge. I have found this to be the case midday thru afternoon. Once the sun gets low in the sky the adult midges are the way to go. Big, gulping rise-forms let you know it is game on for the dries.

Green River, Utah: Flaming Gorge Access Points
Posted by troutstalker on Thursday, December 13 @ 17:55:49 PST
I just moved to Vernal, UT. I was wondering, where are some good places to park that offer access for wading anglers on section A of the Green, in Flaming Gorge? The maps I've seen haven't been too good, so any info you could provide would be great. I've lived in Utah my whole life, and fished many places, but never the Green. How sad is that?!
Thanks in advance!

Rocky Mountain Winter Fly Fishing: Stay On The Move
Posted by fliesandfinswest on Sunday, December 09 @ 17:07:59 PST
Winter has finally hit the west but that does not mean the fishing is over. Winter in Utah Idaho and Wyoming, and any other Rocky Mountain rivers for that matter, can be exceptional in the winter. The key is to stay on the move until you find fish. In many rivers the fish, particularly the browns tend to school up in specific spots during the winter. Could be a legacy of the spawn or it could be the type of water. Look for moderately deep (waist to chest) walking speed water. Slow your presentation down. Often you will not need as much weight as you would during the summer when fish are holding in fast, well oxygenated riffles. Don't be afraid to look for sneaky risers either. Midges are one of the biggest winter food sources for winter trout. When
